If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Have you ever become overwhelmed and lost along the way while working on a project? Do you have moments when you are in the middle of a task and say “What am I doing?” How many things are left undone because the path to completion seems arduous? Does this seem as a failure that is prohibiting you making the moves you desire?
This episode is titled if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Grab a pen and paper! I will share some tips to course correct and get you to developing that master plan.
I realize that some of us may need some convincing that a plan is even necessary.
An architect has the building plans.
The doctor has the medical plan.
The teacher has the lesson plan.
The staffer has the hiring plan.
The promotor has the event plan.
The vacation has the travel plan.
To achieve a high level of work-life balance you must have plans in place. So let’s talk about getting started. I am a person that must write things down for it to become real. I feel most centered when I put pen to paper. I would suggest you begin by mapping or brainstorming. . The goal is to get whatever pops in your head onto something tangible that you can look at.
Answering the 5 W’s is a great starting point.
Who
What
When
Where
Why
And don’t forget the How
Don’t overcomplicate this beginning process. You can use a scrap of paper, sticky notes, brown paper bag, notebook, notes on your phone, dry erase board, or lipstick on your mirror. Whatever it takes to get it out of your head. Digital tools are amazing also. You will be in awe of what certain apps can do to make your process easier. I just write first then transfer to my digital tools.
You will hear educators say begin with the end in mind. That mindset can work in many scenarios. You may have a need for an extra $10,000 a month. How could you earn it? Doing what? Why did I choose that stream of income? What will it take to begin? Where can I position myself to be most successful? Who do I need to align with? When can I start? Let that settle in your mind just a moment.
OK now! For some, answering the 5 W’s may not come all at once. That is fine!!! Put a TBD-to be determined by it. You may not have all the answers, and this provides opportunity to research, watch videos, listen to podcasts, search social media, go to trainings in your interest area or seek advice from professionals.
A wise woman once told me, “if you do something towards your dream each day even if it’s just think about it, you’ve done more than somebody that did nothing.”
Now give yourself permission to gaze upon your thoughts, walk away, and reflect. At this moment, you may see patterns that will organize your plan. You may realize more planning is needed or things may need to be rearranged.
In Part II, I would love to respond to your questions or feedback and give you the blueprint to moving towards the next phase of this process.
